NEW FOR 2011

We will be making provisions for wheel chair racers this year. It was an over sight last year that we didn't even think of this. Nate’s Race welcomes wheel chair participants and will be adding a safe ramp for the section of the race that goes over a curb. We will also allow any wheel chair racers to start in the front row and to the far right side in order for them to be able to start at a pace that suits them. Please contact us directly is any other provisions need to be made for wheel chair participants.

Story Behind the race

Nathan Hergenhahn was a remarkable young man who was admired and loved by many he was well on his way to a great deal of success athletically (through football and basketball) and academically. In the summer between his sophomore and junior year he died in a car accident 6 days after his 16th birthday. In an effort to stay physically and mentally fit, Nathan was also a runner and frequently ran with me (his dad). We had some of our best times together when we would participate in races together and we planned to run a Boston Marathon together. Since Nathan lost his life, I have wanted to put a run together in his memory and am proud to have a race planned for this summer (July 25th) and will have annual races scheduled for the last Sunday in July of each year. This date is important because it coincides with 2 very significant events,

  1. Nathans Birthday July 24th and
  2. The anniversary of his death July 30th (which was the last Sunday in July the year Nathan died).

Since Nathan’s accident I have been in touch with dozens of Nathan’s friends and have discussed the race with all of them and they all seem to believe this would be a very good way to honor Nathan. We have decided to call the event “Nate’s Race” since Nathan was known by most as “Nate”l and this race will be all about Nate. The Scholarship fund* will be the primary reason however, we intend to keep Nate’s memory alive in every ones mind by surrounding ourselves with people that love and admired him and we will always have special events that pay special tribute to Nathan in a way that would be meaningful to him.

In the first year, we will have a guest singer to sing the national anthem, 2 dance performances provided by All that Dance Academy and a musical performance. In future years we plan to expand these aspects of the event. The event will be focused around the run but will be family oriented and will be a Hudson supported event that people will appreciate and enjoy.

*Beneficiary

The Nate’s Race Foundation gives 100% of the money raised by our annual run to Alvirne High School to use for scholarships. It is our position that we want little to do with who gets the scholarships since Alvirne has a fair process to determine worthy canidates. After careful consideration we have requested the priority be given to athletes involved in any sport. While we feel there are many “non- athletes” that are very deserving we have decided that Nathan would have prefered the money go to students that participate in some sport.
